Annie Xibos Spencer's book launch for their new release How to Break an Addiction (Common Notions) is a community gathering experiment that begins in the body—yours and ours, singular and collective. Each book launch event unfolding in December-January is a proposal to (re-)orient. We know how to gather together, we know how to find one another, we know how to get into and stay in formation. We know how to work with our unique and collective toolkits, and how to honor and cultivate the stuff we yearn for — the stuff we value, the stuff we geek out about, the stuff we live to share. We know how, as choreographer Susan Rethorst invites us, “to sit in the synapse.” (Which may be the hardest thing to do; this requires practice, so we practice.) We know how to linger, to rest, to stay. We know how to grieve and we know how to party. This personal, theoretical, embodied, and economically-grounded (yes…) book event will unfold in six cities over the coming weeks, and with the complicity of Annie’s fellow author-artist collaborator Marion Storm, it will shapeshift into different formats thanks to a collection of site-responsive spells. Depending on your region, your city, your beat, your haunt: a performance lecture, a book launch, or a decolonial stargazing evening might be unfolding near you.
Please be in touch to RSVP, communicate curiosity or questions, and/or especially with accessibility questions, for any of these events —
